I went to see the new Bond movie this morning ($5 tickets!) with my auntie and my little brother. It wasn't nearly as good as Casino Royale, if you're kind of movie-goer who gets tired of chase-scene after chase-scene. Car chase-scenes, people chase-scenes, speed boats, airplanes.... and I think it didn't have as much story as its predecessor. I get that Bond has become more cold-blooded, but in this movie he's more of an assassin than a secret agent. Poor "M".....

M: Ask him about Slate.
Tanner [on the phone]: She wants to know about Slate.
James Bond: Slate was a dead end.
Tanner: He says it was a dead end.
M: Damn! He killed him!

And in another scene,

M: You killed a man in Brigenz.
James Bond: I did my best not to.
M: You shot him in cold blood and threw him off a roof. I would hardly call that showing restraint!

Judi Dench is LOVE.

Anybody seen Valkyrie? I've been wanting to see a WWII movie, but I don't know if I want to watch that or Defiance.
I saw the trailer for The Young Victoria. I'm so excited to see Paul Bettany as Lord Melbourne! Check it out:

My New Year's Eve celebration: quesadillas + tacos, apple Martinelli's, and M*A*S*H reruns. :D Happy New Years, everybody!

I haven't written a New Year's resolution list yet, but I will. Soon. And it will probably include "exercise more often". ;)

Obama's first test

If you have been watching the news for the past few hours, you will know about the situation in Mumbai. The New York City of India. 10 sites attacked -- including a hospital --, 87 dead, 185 wounded (and counting), American and British visitors targeted, hostages taken.

A local terrorist group has declared responsibility for the acts, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were affiliated with Al-Queda.

I'm hoping, hoping that the Indian government will let the US bring in their Special Forces to help them.

Ironically, my mum and I were talking about Obama's world-standing, and how groups like these will look to see what sort of leader he is. What sort of opponent. Obama says he wants to talk. And while there are some people, hopefully many, who wish to do just that, there will be others looking for the first weak spot to step on. They know what McCain will do, said my mum. He's a military man. Obama? Will he recoil or stand firm?

Of course, the Bush administration will handle the Mumbai attacks for now. They know what to do -- they've faced 9/11, after all. Obama's just getting a taste of what he'll have to deal with when he comes into office. I, like many Obama supporters, have the best faith in him. It's a highly prestigious position to have, but who the hell wants it?

My mum made another remark at tea today: the extremist groups have expressed that they will conquer Britain and turn it into a Muslim nation. Isn't that a frightening thought?

It's not the fact that they are Muslim -- I have many friends who are. It's when you start to use religion -- any religion -- to justify murder and destruction that it becomes something terrible.

Sen. Barack Obama will defeat Sen. John McCain to become the next U.S. president, CNN projects. Projected wins in West Coast states helped give the Democrat the magic number of electoral votes.

Don't just go back....ARRIVE!

Ahahaha, I love that Sears ad.

So I'm going back to the university tomorrow, much to my regret. I dropped off some of my things last week, so I just have to bring food and a few storage-related items tomorrow. My 2008-2009 dorm is newer (and therefore nicer) than the one I had over the summer, and my roommate seems very nice. I lolz when I saw that she had a hot pink comforter while mine was this pastel blue-green spread with little pink flowers :P More pros: top-most floor, right next to the elevator (which my other dorm lacked), and between us and 2 other girls (in the room nextdoor), we get a bathroom! Don't know how this is going to work instead of the typical communal, multi-shower, toilet, and sink deal, which is usually shared between a whole wing of girls, but we'll see.

I also FINALLY got my hands on A Knight's Tale {Special Edition}, with the Brian Helgeland/Paul Bettany commentary, which I'm definitely going to listen to. :D I've heard it before (with the copy I borrowed from the library), but now I have MY OWN. :) And it was only $5!!

I'm working on a new sketch -- this one's taken from a screencap of Paul Bettany and Kirsten Dunst in Wimbledon. :) I'm not quite finished yet...I want to do more work with the background and get a nicer contrast, but I wanted to upload a preview first. It's rather small and poorly scanned (some of the pencil-work and shading was distorted), so I'll try to post a nicer, finished version soon.

This one's for you, Atlantis2_04!!!

Returning Laptop

Archimedes Wet

Well, I'm finally going to return my Acer laptop to Costco for a Dell, firstly because it's just too heavy to tote around campus (it's a 17", and weighs around 7lbs), and as I pointed out before, has been giving me quite a few problems since I bought it. I'll be without a laptop for 2-3 weeks (which rather sucks because school starts in 2.5 weeks), but my new one will be a pretty red color and have all the feaures I want, so it ought to be worth it. :)

Now I just need to get wireless Internet access and Windows Vista on my *desk*top.... anybody know where I can get a good deal for the software? Fry's Electronics, Costco, Sam's Club....?

Yeah, so I'm going to (finally) get my wisdom teeth out tomorrow (9:00am)...though I'm still feeling a little anxious about it. I'm getting the IV-drip anesthesia (coward that I am), so I'll be out for the duration. I hate needles as it is, but as long as I don't look at it, I'll be okay. :S Can't eat or drink 8 hours prior to getting the anesthesia, but I couldn't resist one little slice of cake. Heck, I won't be eating much of anything for the next 48 hours, so I don't feel too bad about a little indulgence beforehand.

Looking on the bright side, I'll have nothing better to do for two days than browse LJ and write!

Wheee for icons! :)

Feel free to use and credit. I'm still working on several others, but since school's just eating up my time right now, it's a slow process.

Enjoy!

I was walking on campus just a half hour ago, and this tan, long-eared rabbit (or hare, I don't know which) hopped out from behind a tree just a few feet in front of me! Naturally, I froze right in the middle of the path. Now I'm not much of a camper, and this was the first time I'd ever been THAT close to a rabbit (and I guess a wild one, at that). So I just stood there, in the middle of the walkway (scrutinizing a rabbit and probably looking very stupid) as it poked around the dirt (man I wish I had some veggies on me at that point), and for all its brown-ness, it had a very white tail.

I think Stephen Maturin is getting to me. :)

And I saw this beautiful yellow-and-black butterfly on some flowers yesterday (once again, intense scrutinization on my part), and a few days earlier, I saw a hummingbird in one of the local pharmacy stores, just minding its own business and enjoying the air conditioning on one of the aisle signs.

Oh, and on the first day I came on-campus, I saw a squirrel near the dorms. :D

Just my uh, wildlife-appreciation snippet for the day. I need to get back to work! **scurries off to find textbook**

My dad showed this to me: it's actually on the warranty paper that came with the Philips surge protector he just bought:

"This warranty does not cover damages caused by acts of God, including flood, erosion, or earthquake, but excluding lightning on products with Power Blocker technology...."

You gotta read the fine print on those warranties. These guys think of everything.

Twilight

Okay....so would Bella still love Edward if he was NOT impossibly handsome? And would Edward still love Bella if she didn't smell so darn tasty? I might be wrong, but through the entire 3/4 of the book that I actually read, she would not stop reiterating (and reacting to) how drop-dead gorgeous that hunky vampire was, and in turn, Edward kept saying how he had to restrain himself from devouring her! (Sorry: drink her blood)

Oh, and his family: why are they all in their late teens and twenties? You can be a 40-50 year old and still look good (ehem, Harrison Ford, and he's in his sixties, I think!).

I had hoped he would ask her if she'd love him if he were ugly, but considering how she turned down a lesser boy in her class (pimply faced and a little geeky, from my memory), she probably wouldn't. :(

While I think this series is directed at younger teens, I think I prefer the Code V Ultraviolet version of vampires. :) Way, way much scarier and cooler. If you want to watch a good vampire tv-show, watch Ultraviolet.

Well, that's my review for Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. If you haven't read it, don't take this to heart - it's just a personal opinion. Go read it, and decide for yourself if you liked it or not.

I think I'll just stick with Patrick O'Brian and good ol' Aubrey/Maturin for now.

Happy Belated Birthday, Paul!

Iron Man

Okay, first item checked off my summer vacation list: go see Iron Man. In the middle of the afternoon, on a weekday, when there's only three other people in the cinema. :D Hey, it's convenient! First off, fantastic special effects, plotline, music, all of that. And I mean it. I confess, my primary reason for going was to listen to Paul Bettany voicing as J.A.R.V.I.S. (Stark's A.I. program), but I definitely enjoyed the movie as a whole. I didn't think I'd like Tony Stark as much as I did. His change of heart in the beginning of the movie did not seem at all cheesy. Robert Downey Jr. played the part very well. So did all the other actors, respective to their characters.

I won't give away too much for those who have yet to see it, but I have to squeal on one thing:

There is a scene in which Tony Stark's robot-suit gets banged up and shot at to the point it won't come off. The robots in his lab are trying to yank it off of him, and OMG how hilarious it was to hear Paul B.'s voice telling Stark to "please stop struggling, sir" and that it wasn't going to make the suit come off any faster. Something like that. It just made me LOL. Dirty thoughts, perhaps?

Sorry, enough of my fangirlish rambling. I didn't stay for the after-credits bonus scene ,but I'm fairly certain they'll make a sequel. And hopefully get JARVIS in holographic form. ;)

I'm still here, guys. Life's just been busy. Seems like LJ's been going through a few changes since I last checked. Anyway, pleased to note that

[info]concertigrossi's finally posted one of her fics. :D Mmmm....delicious Norrie-angst. Haven't had the time to read it yet, but I've seen it, and I eventually will read it! Hope you haven't given up on Norrington/Caroline! I'm still waiting for that one.

Can't wait 'till summer break. I'm going to take a few classes June and July, so it'll be nice to go to the university when there's a lot less folk around. And luckily I'll still have two more weeks of summer to enjoy before the regular school year starts.

On another good (nay, excellent) note, I am officially smitten with yet another Brit actor.... **drools** For those of you who have -- sadly-- not seen the gorgeous Paul Bettany in action, check out www.paulbettany.net. He's in A Beautiful Mind (fantastic movie; he's married to co-star Jennifer Connelly), the Da Vinci Code, A Knight's Tale (playing THE Geoffrey Chaucer), Wimbledon, Master and Commander (amazing movie, amazing book) and will be in a kid's movie called Inkheart later on next year.

Heath Ledger found dead in NYC apartment

Hercules Meg Sad

NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday in a Manhattan apartment in a possible drug-related death, police said. He was 28.

According to the New York Times, Ledger was found naked and unconscious with pills [possibly over-the-counter sleeping medication] strewn all around him in an apartment. Cause of death is still tentative, whether it was by suicide or accidental over-dose.

My deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and daughter.

Life, that's what all the people say...

But I know I'm gonna change that tune,
When I'm back on top,
back on top in June.
